Thailand, Cambodia Set for Christmas Eve Border Talks After Malaysia Crisis Meeting

Date:

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to hold further discussions this week in an effort to end their deadly border conflict, following crisis talks held in Malaysia.

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said on Monday that both sides would continue negotiations under the framework of the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC), an existing bilateral mechanism.

“The discussion will be held within the Joint Boundary Committee framework, and the meeting has been scheduled for December 24, as proposed by the Cambodian side,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Sihasak stressed that Thailand’s position on de-escalation was clear, adding that a ceasefire must be reflected through concrete actions rather than formal declarations.

“Our position is that a ceasefire does not come with an announcement, but must come from actions,” he said.

The renewed talks come amid heightened tensions along the shared border, which have resulted in casualties on both sides in recent clashes.
