Iran has received no response from Saudi Arabia or Yemen’s Houthi movement to its offer to help broker talks aimed at ending the fighting between the two sides, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said.
In a television interview aired on Tuesday, Araqchi said Tehran had offered to facilitate dialogue as the Iran-aligned Houthis intensified their attacks on Saudi Arabia earlier this month.
Speaking to Iraq’s Al Ekhbariya TV, Araqchi also addressed the possibility of Egypt joining Saudi Arabia in military action against the Houthis.
“Any foreign intervention would complicate matters,” he said, adding that Cairo had previously told Tehran it would not directly intervene in the conflict in Yemen.
Egypt has said it is prepared to provide Saudi Arabia with the support needed to defend its security, a move that could heighten tensions in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, a vote in the Egyptian parliament on possible military action against the Houthi fighters has been postponed until October 26.
Egypt has one of the largest militaries in the Arab world, and any direct involvement could further widen the conflict.
