Democratic Action Party (DAP) publicity secretary Kerk Chee Yee said that if UMNO Youth chief Datuk Mohamad Akmal truly wants the Melaka DAP to exit the state unity government, there is no need for “drama.” All that is needed, he added, is for the Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, to “press the button” and officially announce the termination of the coalition with the Melaka Pakatan Harapan (PH).
“The fact is, it was the Melaka Chief Minister himself who in 2023 invited the Melaka DAP to join the state unity government. The Chief Minister has also repeatedly expressed pride in successfully establishing the coalition,” Kerk said.
Kerk, who is also the state assemblyman for Ayer Keroh, posted the statement on his Facebook page today, noting that since joining the unity government, the Melaka DAP has consistently supported Ab Rauf’s leadership. However, the party has occasionally raised criticisms on certain policies and issues due to differing views.
“If any political party no longer believes in the spirit of unity, it should be honest with the people instead of exploiting racial sentiments to mislead them,” he said.
Kerk urged Akmal to stop “playing to the gallery,” pointing out that as a member of the Melaka State Executive Council, Akmal has ample opportunity to meet with the Chief Minister directly to express his intentions.
