Former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has stated that while he and UMNO are each “in a good place,” it does not mean he won’t offer fair commentary on the party. He also said he has yet to decide whether to return to UMNO, emphasizing that any move would need to happen gradually.
After attending the 2025 UMNO General Assembly, many—including his mother—asked Khairy when he would rejoin the party. He clarified that he is not currently a member and has made no decisions regarding a return.
“I told her I’m not a member yet, and nothing has happened so far. During the UMNO assembly, I also told the media, ‘Let’s take it one step at a time,’” he said.
On the latest episode of his program “Keluar Sebentar”, Khairy reiterated that UMNO remains his preferred party. However, he stressed that any reintegration must follow proper procedures and be based on mutual trust with UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“If this is the direction, it must be done with dignity and trust,” he said.
Khairy also clarified that his attendance at the UMNO Youth Assembly was at the invitation of UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Akmal and in his capacity as a former UMNO Youth Chief.
Initially hesitant, Khairy sought Ahmad Zahid’s opinion after meeting him during a prayer ceremony for the late Prime Minister Tun Razak. Upon learning of the invitation, Ahmad Zahid told him, “Go ahead,” which resolved all his concerns.
“I didn’t expect such a warm reaction, but this is UMNO Youth—they were excited to see a former chief make an appearance,” Khairy added.
