Kuala Lumpur’s artificial intelligence-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) network has assisted authorities in solving 50 criminal cases since it was introduced in 2020.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said a total of RM500 million has been invested so far to operate around 10,000 cameras across the capital. She described the system as a valuable long-term investment for public safety and urban management.
The system is managed through the Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre and is also used to assist authorities in monitoring floods, managing traffic congestion, and enhancing overall city safety.
“We want a Kuala Lumpur that is safe for children, women, and all visitors to go anywhere in the capital,” she said during a press conference attended by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud and city police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said the smart surveillance system plays a key role in tracking criminal activity using facial recognition and vehicle identification through high-resolution cameras.
He added that the initiative significantly supports police operations, especially in monitoring and responding to incidents more efficiently across the city.
Fadil also noted that traffic congestion remains a major challenge, particularly during peak hours, with officers currently required to manage flow manually. He expressed hope that the integrated AI system could eventually automate traffic management by adjusting signals based on real-time conditions.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud said DBKL and the police will continue strengthening cooperation to improve public services and city safety.
He added that the integrated CCTV system enables faster coordination between agencies by providing real-time monitoring and reducing delays in incident response.
Addressing privacy concerns, Hannah Yeoh clarified that the CCTV system is deployed only in public areas and does not infringe on personal privacy.
