Malaysia to Leverage China, Russia Ties to Push for End to Iran Attacks, Says PM Anwar

Date:

Malaysia will continue using its strong diplomatic relations with China and Russia to press for an end to violent attacks on Iran, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Speaking during his winding-up speech on a motion condemning Israel’s attacks on Iran, Anwar said the country will maintain engagement with both global powers, while Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan continues discussions with counterparts to seek support in halting the violence.

“Statements have already been issued by both Russia and China. We will assist, though I humbly acknowledge our limitations,” Anwar said. He explained that Malaysia’s lack of direct relations with Israel and limited capacity restrict the country’s role, but added that avenues such as ASEAN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and relations with Arab nations would be fully utilised.

Anwar was responding to Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal (Warisan–Semporna), who highlighted the key role of Russia and China, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, in negotiations, noting that Malaysia’s influence would be limited without collaboration with these major powers.

Despite these constraints, Anwar emphasised Malaysia’s commitment to peace efforts. “It is difficult for us to play any role other than maintaining harmonious relations with Arab countries, Iran, and other Islamic nations beyond ASEAN,” he said.

The Prime Minister also confirmed that Malaysia maintains good diplomatic relations with Iran, despite international sanctions that sometimes complicate engagement. He revealed that he had personally contacted Iran’s President twice, including during a meeting in Beijing, reaffirming mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

“Although there are limitations and at times difficulties due to international regulations, decisions, and sanctions, we have agreed to enhance cooperation and relations, including in education, investment, and trade,” Anwar said.

He further noted that Malaysia has conveyed its support through diplomatic channels, including communications with the Iranian ambassador. Anwar stressed that Parliament’s united condemnation of the attacks sends a strong message.

“I believe this parliamentary statement, representing all parties, is stronger than what we might otherwise convey. This will be sent to the embassy, as it reflects the firm position of our country,” he concluded.
