The Melaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN) is expected to be dissolved today, paving the way for a state election.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh is expected to announce the dissolution at 3pm during a special press conference at Kompleks Seri Negeri in Ayer Keroh.
Sources said Ab Rauf is scheduled to chair a state executive council meeting at noon before attending a post-Exco meeting at the Seri Negeri Auditorium at 2pm.
A separate notice has reportedly been issued to Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblymen, instructing them to gather at Seri Negeri at 2.30pm today. The notices were said to have been issued yesterday.
The dissolution letter is also understood to have been signed by Melaka Governor Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam before he departed for Japan.
However, no official announcement on the dissolution had been made at the time of reporting.
Melaka’s DUN has 28 seats, with the current state government’s mandate due to expire on December 31 if the assembly is not dissolved earlier.
The last Melaka state election was held on November 20, 2021, following the dissolution of the DUN in October that year amid a political crisis after several assemblymen withdrew their support for the then state government.
BN won 21 of the 28 seats in that election, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) secured five and Perikatan Nasional (PN) won two.
Of PH’s five seats, DAP won four — Ayer Keroh, Kesidang, Kota Laksamana and Bandar Hilir — while Amanah secured Bukit Katil.
Melaka has now emerged as the next focus in a series of state elections after BN recorded victories in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, where the coalition secured 48 of 56 seats and 18 of 36 seats respectively.
The results have also boosted BN’s election machinery in Melaka, with attention now turning to whether the coalition can maintain its momentum in the coming state election.
