Myanmar’s president has ordered deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to be moved to house arrest, five years after she was detained following the 2021 military coup.
In a statement, the office of Min Aung Hlaing said he has “commuted the remaining sentence” of the 80-year-old former leader, allowing her to serve it at a designated residence.
However, authorities did not immediately confirm her exact location. A senior member of her dissolved National League for Democracy (NLD) party told AFP that she is expected to be held at an undisclosed address in the capital, Naypyidaw.
“We do not know where it is exactly,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons.
Min Aung Hlaing, who led the military coup against Aung San Suu Kyi while serving as armed forces chief, triggered a civil conflict that has continued since the takeover.
He was recently sworn in as Myanmar’s civilian president following a tightly controlled election that excluded Suu Kyi’s party from participation.
