Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak celebrated his 73rd birthday on Wednesday, with his team expressing gratitude after receiving an outpouring of birthday wishes from supporters on social media despite him remaining behind bars.
In a Facebook post published on his behalf, Najib’s team thanked members of the public for their messages and said he was deeply touched by the overwhelming support.
“So many people still remember me,” the post read.
The team also prayed that those who sent their well wishes would continue to be blessed with good health, prosperity and success.
Najib is currently serving his sentence at Kajang Prison after being convicted in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case involving RM42 million.
He was found guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering, and began serving his prison sentence on 23 August 2022.
Najib was originally sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment and fined RM210 million. However, the Pardons Board reduced his sentence to six years and lowered the fine to RM50 million in 2024.
Under the board’s decision, failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment.
Separately, on 26 December 2025, the High Court found Najib guilty on 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
He was sentenced to 165 years in prison and fined RM11.38 billion. As the prison terms are to run concurrently, the additional effective sentence is 15 years, which will only begin after he completes his sentence in the SRC International case.
