PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar says she will remain committed to the party’s struggle, but plans to pursue it through a different platform focused on civil society.
Speaking at the opening of the 2026 PKR National Women’s and Youth Wing Congress at the Melaka International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITC) today, she said decisions she makes may not satisfy everyone.
Nurul Izzah said she had chosen to continue contributing to the reform agenda outside the party’s direct political structure, describing it as a path through the Madani community.
She acknowledged that some people had found it difficult to accept different stages of her political journey, including her defeat in the 2022 General Election, her victory in the 2025 party polls and her decision to step away in 2026.
“You cannot please everyone, but you can remain true to yourself,” she said.
Also present at the event were PKR Women chief Fadhlina Sidek and PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Munim.
Nurul Izzah had previously expressed her intention to step down as PKR deputy president. However, the party’s Central Leadership Council decided not to accept her resignation.
PKR information chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the decision followed Nurul Izzah’s request for time to focus on herself as well as complete and continue her PhD studies.
In her speech, Nurul Izzah also urged PKR leaders to uphold the spirit and principles of reformasi in every decision and action, particularly while holding political power.
She cautioned party leaders against becoming what they once opposed, stressing that power should always be exercised with the country’s interests in mind.
“Even though we have weaknesses, we must do our best to avoid becoming what we hate most about our opponents. We must always remain vigilant. When we have power, ask ourselves whether we are doing all this for ourselves or for the country,” she said.
Her remarks underline the importance of maintaining the reform agenda beyond political positions, as PKR continues to navigate its leadership and direction ahead.
