One Dead, Four Injured In Homemade Bomb Attack On Greek Politicians’ Homes

Date:

A deadly explosion involving a homemade device has struck homes linked to three politicians from Greece’s ruling party, leaving one person dead and four others injured in a pre-dawn attack in Thessaloniki.

Police said the incident involved improvised explosives made from gas canisters, which were thrown at residential properties belonging to figures from the New Democracy party, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The Greek Prime Minister expressed “anger and hatred” over what he described as a “cowardly, terrorist and murderous attack”, condemning the violence targeting political figures and their families.

According to local media outlet Kathimerini, among the injured were the parents of former party candidate Afroditi Nestora, who were rushed to hospital following the blast. The report also identified two other targeted individuals as Zisis Ioakimovic, president of the party’s executive committee, and former MP Savvas Anastasiades.

Hospital authorities in Thessaloniki later confirmed that Nestora’s mother succumbed to her injuries in the evening, while her father remains under medical care.

Police said the explosion also caused extensive damage, with four vehicles parked in Nestora’s garage engulfed in flames following the blast.

Authorities have yet to identify any suspects or establish a motive behind the attack, with investigations still ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
