PAS Confirms Umno Talks Amid Muafakat Nasional Revival Speculation

Date:

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has confirmed that leaders from PAS and Umno held discussions last night, as speculation grows over a possible revival of the Muafakat Nasional (MN) cooperation.

However, Hadi downplayed the significance of the meeting, describing it as a routine engagement and distancing himself from the gathering. He said he was not directly involved in the talks.

“We meet those (Umno leaders) who want to meet us. I wasn’t involved, but they informed me about it,” he told reporters after attending an event at Masjid Rusila in Terengganu on Friday.

According to reports, PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad and secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan were among those present at the meeting, which was held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

It is understood that Umno’s political bureau also convened separately on the same day, with the meeting reportedly taking place at the same hotel, further fuelling political speculation on possible realignments.

The developments come shortly after PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man suggested that cooperation between PAS and Umno should be revisited ahead of the Johor state election, describing it as an appropriate moment to revive MN.

At the same time, PAS is also reassessing its position within Perikatan Nasional (PN), particularly its relationship with Bersatu amid rising internal tensions within the coalition.

Hadi had previously pointed to several issues straining ties with Bersatu, including disputes over leadership moves in Perlis, alleged interference in Kedah and Kelantan appointments, and disagreements over the inclusion of new Malay-Muslim parties into PN.

The MN alliance, formed in 2019 between Umno and PAS during the Pakatan Harapan administration, eventually collapsed after PAS joined forces with Bersatu to form PN in 2020, reshaping Malaysia’s political landscape.
