PAS Eyes Opposition Position In Johor State Assembly

Date:

PAS has set its ambition to emerge as the opposition bloc in Johor following the upcoming state election on July 11, with party president Abdul Hadi Awang expressing confidence that the party can secure all 11 seats it is contesting.

The Johor State Assembly consists of 56 seats, with 29 seats required to form a simple majority and take control of the state government.

Abdul Hadi said PAS’ objective is not only to perform well in the election but also to position itself as an influential opposition and adviser to the state administration.

“Our target is to become the opposition in Johor and act as an adviser to the state government,” he was quoted as saying.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining Malay-Muslim leadership in the state, adding that Johor should not be governed by liberal or non-Muslim elements.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) is expected to contest 33 seats in the election, with Bersatu fielding candidates in 16 seats, the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) in five, and Pejuang in one.

Prior to dissolution, Barisan Nasional held 40 seats in the state assembly, while Pakatan Harapan had 12, PN three, and MUDA one.

In the last Johor state election in 2022, PAS managed to win only one seat, namely Maharani.
