Penang State Confirms Modest Aidilfitri Open House Despite PM’s Cost-Cutting Call

Date:

The Penang state government has confirmed it will go ahead with its Aidilfitri open house this year, albeit on a smaller scale, despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urging ministries, agencies, and government-linked companies to refrain from hosting such events as a cost-saving measure.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow explained that the state has not yet received any official circular from the Chief Secretary to the Government regarding the directive, and preparations for the open house are already well underway with invitations sent out.

“The State Executive Council has also not had the opportunity to formally discuss the matter,” Chow said, noting that the event, jointly organised with the Penang Governor, is a longstanding tradition for engaging with the public. He added that the open house is always conducted modestly and not extravagantly.

For departmental and agency-level celebrations, Chow suggested holding internal or potluck gatherings to keep costs down. He emphasised that such events play a key role in fostering racial unity and provide an opportunity for the community to come together, especially during uncertain economic times.

Chow also warned against efforts by extremist groups to create divisions, highlighting the importance of maintaining harmony during festive celebrations.
