PKR Leader Says Student Ummi Umairah Must Not Be Bullied Over Najib Donation Remarks

Date:

University students should not be bullied for expressing their views, provided they remain respectful and do not cross the line, says Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Paya Besar branch chief Wan Fauzuldin Wan Samad.

He said students had the right to voice their opinions and criticism, stressing that individuals such as Ummi Umairah Bakhit should be allowed to speak without facing pressure from those who disagreed with them.

“Young people have the right to express their view that ‘donating’ to someone who is a plunderer and corrupt is a ‘stupid’ act.

“If politicians or ‘evil religious scholars’ want to sympathise with a plunderer, they are free to do so. But do not bully young people and students like Ummi Umairah,” he said in a statement on Monday.

During a recent open forum with Umno leaders, Ummi Umairah questioned why members of the public were donating money to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pay a RM50 million court fine.

Her remarks subsequently drew criticism on social media, including comments containing threats against the student.

Wan Fauzuldin also praised Universiti Malaya (UM) for confirming that no disciplinary action would be taken against Ummi Umairah over the questions and opinions she had expressed.

He stressed that differences in opinion should not be viewed as a threat, but rather as an essential part of intellectual discourse that should be encouraged.

He added that university students should be nurtured into critical thinkers who uphold their principles and act responsibly.

“To all young people and students, continue to express your views and criticism, as long as you do not cross the boundaries of decency and respect.

“Believe that the majority of Malaysians will stand behind you and protect you from these gangs of bullies and plunderers,” he said.
