PM Anwar: Political Leaders Facing Court May Be Spared Wearing MACC Orange Remand Shirts

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said political leaders who are set to be brought to court may be given leeway not to wear the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remand attire.

Anwar said the flexibility had been communicated yesterday, although he did not clarify whether the matter was discussed at an official meeting or during an event he attended.

“Yesterday, I also conveyed that before prosecution, when someone is brought to court and charged, there is no need to wear the orange (MACC remand) attire.

“If you want to investigate, investigate first. If there is a case to be brought for prosecution, I leave the matter of what colour clothing should be worn to the enforcement authorities,” he said.

Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers and a funeral prayer at Bukit Indah Mosque in Ampang today, Anwar said he respected the view that suspects who fully cooperate with investigations did not necessarily need to wear the orange attire.

“So far, I respect the view because there are people who cooperate with investigations, and they do not need to be made to wear orange because it could create a different perception,” he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar vowed to take a firm stance in fighting corruption and abuse of power for as long as he was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as Prime Minister.

He stressed that the fight against corruption was not about race or protecting political positions, but about safeguarding the country.

“Malay, Chinese, Indian, Sabah or Sarawak communities… this is not about race. This is about saving the country. It is not about saving positions or protecting groups.

“Even if I face risks or pressure, God willing, I ask the people to pray that we can continue and clean up this country,” he said.
