Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded media practitioners to continue upholding values, ethics and national identity as the country moves forward with rapid technological developments.
He said the media must remain vigilant in navigating challenges brought about by advancements in technology, warning that society could lose direction if these issues were not addressed responsibly.
Anwar stressed that while freedom in information technology, digital platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) should be encouraged, these developments must continue to be guided by strong values and principles.
He added that the role of writers and columnists was also important in ensuring discussions surrounding technology and its impact on society received greater attention.
“I believe the government, through Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has a shared responsibility to support the media.
“We will listen to views and accept criticism with an open mind because, in this matter, the country cannot afford to be divided,” he said.
Anwar was speaking at the Malaysian Press Night (MWM) 2026 and the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI)-PETRONAS Journalism Awards 2026, which was also attended by Fahmi.
He said cooperation between the government, media industry and relevant agencies was essential to ensure technological progress continues to benefit the nation while preserving responsible journalism.
