The Prime Minister’s Department has dismissed speculation surrounding a BMW recently used by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, clarifying that the vehicle is not a newly acquired official car but an existing government asset assigned on a temporary basis.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the department explained that the BMW belongs to the Protocol and International Conference Secretariat Division and is regularly used for official government duties, including transporting visiting heads of state and foreign leaders in accordance with international protocol and security requirements.
According to the department, the vehicle is equipped with advanced security features capable of withstanding high-calibre ballistic threats, explosions and other modern security risks, including potential drone attacks. Such specifications are necessary to ensure the safety of high-profile dignitaries during official engagements.
The department said the BMW was temporarily assigned to the Prime Minister following recommendations and security assessments by the police after Anwar’s official vehicle, which had been bestowed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, was sent for maintenance.
The clarification came after social media users questioned the use of the BMW when it was seen during the launch of the Teksi Madani initiative on 3 July. The Prime Minister’s Department stressed that the arrangement is temporary and involves an existing government vehicle rather than the purchase of a new official car.
