Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has alleged that the cancellation of the coalition’s registration ahead of the Melaka state election was motivated by fear of the opposition bloc.
Samsuri described the decision to cancel PN’s registration just one day before the matter was due to be brought to court as unusual and potentially unprecedented.
He said the Election Commission (EC) had written to PN two days earlier seeking clarification over the coalition’s use of its logo.
“Remember, the people’s wave cannot easily be extinguished by politicians hiding behind their power.
“Especially when any politician makes ‘we will work towards banning this’ a key performance indicator (KPI) to align themselves with the side we are facing in the election,” he said in a statement.
Samsuri was referring to the Registrar of Societies (RoS), which announced that the decision to cancel PN’s registration had been made after reviewing documents and explanations submitted by the coalition in response to a notice dated September 22.
According to the RoS, PN’s explanations failed to refute the grounds for cancellation outlined in the notice and did not provide sufficient justification for maintaining the coalition’s registration.
