Differences in political affiliations between the Federal and state governments should not become a barrier to cooperation, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He stressed that despite differences in political views and parties, maintaining close ties between the two levels of government was essential to ensure that development and assistance could directly benefit the people.
“Our country’s system requires very close cooperation.
“We cannot prevent different views or different political parties, but that should not stop friendship, brotherhood and cooperation that will directly benefit the people,” he said.
Anwar said the close cooperation shown by the Melaka state government and the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) was an example of how political differences should not stand in the way of efforts to serve the public.
He expressed his appreciation for the support and cooperation extended by the state government, expressing hope that efforts to create a sustainable landscape in line with the Malaysia MADANI concept could be translated into tangible results soon.
Anwar was speaking when officiating the National Landscape Day celebration themed ‘Sustainable Landscape, Malaysia MADANI’ at Hang Jebat Stadium in Krubong here last night.
Also present were Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Meanwhile, Anwar said national development planning must also focus on places frequently used by ordinary Malaysians, including the cleanliness and appearance of food stalls.
He said relevant authorities should allocate specific funding to improve such areas instead of concentrating excessively on mega projects, which he said tended to benefit higher-income groups more.
“We are indeed known for impressive and grand landmarks, but we must not forget that most Malaysians do not eat at five-star restaurants. Around 80 per cent of people in Kuala Lumpur eat at stalls, food outlets and small restaurants.
“How much attention do we give to improving and cleaning these food stalls? That is why I say our planning will fail if we do not strike the right balance,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that development must therefore be carried out in a balanced manner across various areas, including everyday public spaces, to improve the quality of life of Malaysians while enhancing the country’s standing internationally.
