Qatar Urges Iran To Show Good Faith To Ease Middle East Tensions

Date:

Qatar has urged Iran to demonstrate good intentions for diplomatic mediation efforts to succeed, calling on Tehran to stop threatening Arab Gulf states and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

A spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry made the remarks on Tuesday after a Qatari delegation visited Tehran earlier this week to help ease regional tensions in coordination with the United States.

Qatar, alongside Pakistan, has been mediating between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, which has disrupted global shipping and oil supplies while spreading instability across the Middle East.

The diplomatic push comes as regional tensions continue to escalate.

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan also met Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday in an attempt to de-escalate the conflict.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi movement launched fresh attacks on Saudi Arabia, including an attack it said targeted the Ras Tanura oil refinery. Egypt has also approved defence support for Saudi Arabia following the escalation in Houthi attacks.

Relations between Washington and Tehran have deteriorated further in recent days, with US President Donald Trump saying on Friday that the United States could launch another military operation against Iran.

Iranian security officials have also told Reuters that Tehran has drawn up detailed plans to target undersea cables in the Gulf if the United States and Israel launch further attacks.

Qatar’s latest appeal highlights growing regional efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating further, although the success of the mediation efforts remains uncertain.
