Selangor Sultan: Ulama and Leaders Must Strengthen One Another While Preserving Integrity

Date:

Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has stressed that religious scholars and leaders should strengthen one another despite having different roles, while ensuring advice can be delivered truthfully and without compromising the integrity of knowledge.

His Royal Highness said the role of the monarchy was to provide protection and support for institutions, while ulama must have the courage to offer sincere advice free from interests that could undermine their credibility.

“In this context, I believe that ulama and umara have different roles, but they should strengthen one another.

“A good relationship is not one that closes the door to criticism, but one that preserves proper conduct, respects respective jurisdictions and places the interests of the ummah first,” he said.

The Sultan was speaking at the Multaqa Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj: Legacy of the Selangor Sultanate in Empowering Islam in the Malay World.

He said the Selangor Sultanate’s legacy in advancing Islam rested on three main pillars: continuity of governance and efforts to uphold Islam, comprehensive and integrated education, and the establishment of institutions that translate Islamic law into policies, fatwas and public services.

“These three pillars must be strengthened wisely through approaches suited to the demands of the times.

“As the successor to the legacy of previous Selangor rulers, I will ensure it continues to be preserved, with attention given to strengthening the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah, the authority of fatwas, Islamic administration, education and the advancement of knowledge,” he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin also cautioned scholars against being easily influenced by fragments of information without proper verification or reference to authoritative sources.

“Do not rely solely on snippets of information from short videos, which may not be authentic or complete. Instead, refer to authoritative sources and seek guidance from recognised scholars,” he said.

He also urged the people to preserve unity and respect institutions entrusted with managing Islamic affairs.

“Examine history honestly, discuss differences with proper conduct and put forward proposals grounded in reality,” he advised.

Earlier at the event, the Sultan launched three initiatives: the Sheikhul Islam and Muftis of Selangor (1930–2021) book, Compilation of Fatwa Articles 2001–2005 (Volume 1), and the e-Fatwa system.
