The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has called for a comprehensive and decisive approach to address the state’s long-standing flood problem, urging authorities to work towards a clear goal of zero floods.
He said the best expertise should be sought, whether from within the country or abroad, and emphasised the need to utilise knowledge, technology and experience. The sultan cautioned against offering excuses, stressing that the suffering of the people should not be accepted as the cost of poor planning.
“I am aware that storms, typhoons, heavy rainfall and natural disasters are beyond human control, as they are acts of God,” he said in his New Year message on Sunday.
“However, I am confident that flooding can be overcome if there is a sound system in place, long-term planning, and honest and disciplined implementation.”
Sultan Sharafuddin also reminded those entrusted with power and responsibility — particularly political leaders in Selangor — to set aside political considerations and focus on resolving the people’s problems.
He said all planning and action must be guided by a single primary objective: the well-being of the people and the stability of the state.
“Direct all energy and thought towards building meaningful development so that the people can live more comfortably, have their welfare protected and feel secure under a fair and effective system,” he said.
“Remember, nothing is impossible when intentions are sincere and efforts are genuine.”
In the same message, the sultan and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended their New Year greetings to the people of Selangor.
Sultan Sharafuddin expressed hope that 2026 would bring greater prosperity to the state and inspire its people to become better individuals, guided by stronger values and making greater contributions to their families, society and Selangor.
“May Allah SWT bless this state and all my people. Happy New Year 2026,” he said.
