Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has called on Malaysians to pray not only for him, but also for the country’s justice system as he awaits the Federal Court’s final decision on his appeal in Putrajaya.
In a video posted on Facebook on Sunday, the former Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) president said he hoped Malaysia would continue to uphold a legal system that protects everyone equally, regardless of political affiliation, status or position.
“To the people of Muar and all Malaysians, don’t just pray for me. Pray that Malaysia remains a country where the law protects everyone, whether friend or foe, those in power or ordinary citizens,” he said.
Syed Saddiq said he had done everything within his ability and was now leaving the outcome to Allah SWT, adding that truth should stand on its own without relying on power or influence.
The statement comes a day before the Federal Court is scheduled to deliver its final ruling on his appeal against his conviction and sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane and a RM10 million fine involving four charges linked to funds belonging to the youth wing of the former Bersatu party, Armada. The charges include criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering.
The verdict was originally scheduled to be delivered on 30 June, but was postponed after one member of the five-judge panel, Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali, was unable to attend the proceedings due to medical leave. Court of Appeal President Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais said the panel had been ready to announce its decision before the unexpected postponement.
Syed Saddiq stressed that he was not seeking sympathy from the public but hoped Malaysians would see the importance of standing by one’s principles during difficult times.
He said he had gone through more than six years of legal proceedings, attended every court appearance without requesting delays, and had never sought special treatment. According to him, the courts remain the proper place for truth to be tested through evidence and for justice to be determined under the rule of law.
Reflecting on the legal process, Syed Saddiq noted that the Court of Appeal had previously ruled unanimously in his favour. However, he said the Federal Court’s decision would now be final, and regardless of the outcome, he would continue to respect the judicial process.
“I will not pre-empt the court. I respect the process and will attend calmly. Whatever happens, I do not regret defending my principles and moral convictions, even if there are consequences,” he said, adding that true leadership is tested when one’s future and freedom are on the line, yet the right path is still chosen over revenge.Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has called on Malaysians to pray not only for him, but also for the country’s justice system as he awaits the Federal Court’s final decision on his appeal in Putrajaya.
