Syed Saddiq Plans Thanksgiving Event In Muar After Final Court Victory

Date:

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman plans to hold a thanksgiving gathering in his Johor constituency to express gratitude to residents who stood by him throughout his six-year legal battle.

The 34-year-old said he owes a great deal to the people of Muar for continuing to place their trust in him despite the challenges he faced.

“I am deeply indebted, especially to the people of Muar who have always stood with me. Some may have forgotten that just one or two weeks before the previous general election, the court ruled there was a prima facie case against me.

“Even then, the people of Muar continued to place their hope and full confidence in me. I’ve been thinking of organising a thanksgiving event in Muar, possibly this weekend, God willing. Parliament is sitting now, so after this I will head straight there,” he told reporters after the Federal Court upheld his acquittal on Monday.

The former Youth and Sports Minister said that after being acquitted by the Court of Appeal last year, he immediately shifted his focus back to serving the people of Muar.

He pledged to continue working tirelessly to safeguard the welfare of his constituents and honour the trust they have placed in him.

“I’ve never stopped looking for ways to help the people and improve their welfare through my work,” he said.

Earlier on Monday, the Federal Court dismissed the prosecution’s final appeal, fully acquitting Syed Saddiq of all charges and overturning his previous sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane and a RM10 million fine.

In a 2-1 majority decision, Justices Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that the Court of Appeal had made no legal error in acquitting the former minister in June last year.
