The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced a ban on heavy vehicles on March 19-20 and March 28-29 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, as part of efforts to reduce road accidents during the festive period.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has been instructed to enforce the ban at the highest level. “During Hari Raya, we often see a spike in accidents caused by negligence and poor travel planning. This ban is necessary to enhance road safety,” he said during the MoT’s 2026 monthly assembly and the Paduan Kasih Madani and Ihya Ramadan programme.
Loke also highlighted plans to increase passenger capacity and train trips via Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) to meet high demand during the festive season. He added that the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) service, expected to launch next year, will provide additional travel options for those heading to the East Coast.
The minister emphasised that JPJ will conduct more frequent inspections of the land transport sector to maintain safety and compliance standards. “All permits issued for express buses and other vehicles during the festive period must be executed safely and in an orderly manner,” he said.
Loke urged the public to prioritise safety while travelling. “We do not want Hari Raya celebrations to turn tragic due to road impatience. Use public transport when possible, check your vehicles before the journey, and always obey the speed limit,” he added.
