There is no immediate need for the 16th General Election (GE16) to be held as the unity government remains stable, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said.
Fahmi, who is also the unity government spokesman and PKR information chief, said the current administration could continue until the end of its term, with GE16 potentially taking place as late as the end of next year.
He said coalition partners within the unity government had reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim until the completion of his term. This, he added, meant there was no basis for an early election at present.
“There is no need for an early election,” he told reporters after officiating the 2026 Safe Internet Parents and Teachers Association Convention.
Fahmi was responding to speculation that GE16 could be called soon amid recent political developments. He said the unity government’s continued support for Anwar remained an important factor in determining the need for any early election.
On separate reports that PKR’s Subang MP Wong Chen was planning to resign from his parliamentary seat, Fahmi said he had not received any information regarding the matter.
He said any development concerning parliamentary seats must first be confirmed through an official announcement by the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
“We should wait for a statement from the Dewan Rakyat Speaker. Anything involving the Dewan Rakyat, including seats in the Dewan Rakyat, requires an official announcement from the Speaker,” he said.
Yesterday, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul confirmed that Wong had expressed his intention to resign as the Subang MP during a recent meeting.
However, Johari did not confirm whether Wong had formally submitted a resignation letter, despite claims circulating on social media, and also did not disclose the reasons behind the reported decision.
Speculation surrounding the three-term MP intensified after Wong shared a photograph of a letter bearing his parliamentary service centre’s letterhead and addressed to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
Wong, who is associated with former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, has yet to provide further details on the matter and said he would issue a statement on Monday.
