US Launches New Strikes On Iran As Tehran Announces Closure Of Strait Of Hormuz

Date:

Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after the United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes against multiple targets in Iran, prompting a dramatic response from Tehran.

According to the U.S. Central Command, the latest attacks began at 5.15pm EDT (9.15pm GMT) on Wednesday. In a statement posted on X, the military said the operation was carried out in response to what it described as Iran’s “unwarranted and continued aggression.”

The strikes mark the latest development in a rapidly worsening confrontation between Washington and Tehran, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.

In a significant escalation, Iran’s top joint military command announced on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed to all maritime traffic, including oil tankers and commercial vessels.

Iranian authorities warned that any ship attempting to pass through the strategic waterway would be targeted, signalling a major challenge to one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery for global energy supplies, with a substantial portion of the world’s oil exports passing through the narrow channel each day. Any prolonged disruption could have far-reaching consequences for international trade and energy markets.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation as both sides continue to exchange accusations and military pressure, with fears growing that the crisis could expand beyond the immediate conflict zone.
