Parti Warisan has lodged a police report against Sepang Umno division chief Datuk Noorazli Said over remarks he made during the party’s general assembly which the party claims were insulting to the Catholic faith.
Warisan strategic communications director Christopher Masudal said he lodged the report at the Penampang district police headquarters on Monday (Sept 14), urging police to investigate Noorazli’s remarks.
He called on the authorities to conduct a fair investigation and determine whether the speech breached any laws concerning race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.
“When the church is used as an inappropriate analogy, it affects not just a few members of the clergy but thousands of the faithful,” Christopher said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 15).
He said freedom of religion was guaranteed under the Federal Constitution and urged political leaders to protect religious sensitivities in Malaysia’s multiracial and multi-faith society.
Christopher also called on Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to clarify whether Noorazli’s remarks represented the party’s position.
If they did not, he urged Zahid to explain what disciplinary action would be taken against the Umno division chief.
“The police report is not intended to inflame religious or racial sentiments.
“It is an effort to preserve freedom of religion, mutual respect among believers, and Malaysia’s social harmony,” Christopher said.
He urged political leaders to treat all religions with respect regardless of political differences.
