MCA’s decision to contest two state seats in the upcoming Melaka state election will give the party an opportunity to represent local communities and ensure Barisan Nasional (BN) maintains its multiracial representation, BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Zahid said the decision was reached after MCA held a meeting involving its top leadership.
He said BN wanted to ensure that all ethnic groups and segments of society in Melaka had the opportunity to be represented in the state’s political leadership.
“This gives voters confidence that BN continues to look after the interests of various races and groups within society.
“We believe Melaka’s diversity is particularly important in ensuring balanced representation in the state’s leadership and politics,” he said.
He was speaking at the FELCRA Berhad Participants’ Projects Interim Profit Distribution 2/2026 ceremony at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) on Thursday.
Earlier, Zahid confirmed that an agreement had been reached with MCA for the party to contest two state seats in the upcoming Melaka election.
The seat allocation had previously triggered disagreements within BN, culminating in MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong walking out of the hall during BN’s candidate announcement at MITC last Saturday.
The dispute was subsequently addressed through negotiations involving Wee, BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Melaka BN chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, with discussions reportedly making positive progress.
The latest development was followed by the attendance of MCA’s two candidates at a closed-door ceremony to receive their election appointment letters at Menara Dato’ Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC), on Wednesday.
Datuk Lim Ban Hong will contest the Klebang state seat, while Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem will contest Machap Jaya.
