Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) continue to enjoy a strong working relationship at the federal level despite facing each other in the Johor state election, BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Ahmad Zahid stressed that both coalitions have remained professional and politically mature, placing national interests above political rivalry while serving together in the Unity Government.
He said issues at the federal level are handled collectively as members of the Cabinet, while political contests at the state level are treated as separate matters.
Speaking after launching the RISDA Agro Majestic programme in Bandar Tenggara on Saturday, the UMNO president said both BN and PH are committed to maintaining harmony throughout the Johor state election campaign.
According to him, both sides have agreed to focus on healthy political competition without resorting to excessive personal attacks or provocation.
He added that if any leaders from either coalition make inappropriate remarks during the campaign, efforts should be made to ease tensions in the interest of preserving democratic values.
Ahmad Zahid also said electoral success today is no longer determined by attacking political opponents, but by presenting capable and credible candidates for voters to assess.
He cited professionals such as doctors and former ministers contesting under the BN banner, saying the coalition’s campaign would focus on highlighting the strengths and qualifications of its candidates rather than criticising rival parties.
A total of 172 candidates are contesting in the Johor state election, with polling scheduled for July 11 and early voting on July 7.
