The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has issued a firm warning that no special treatment will be given to any player who fails to comply with the rules set by the governing body.
BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said disciplinary issues involving national shuttlers have been identified, and action will be taken based on recommendations from the Performance Committee.
He said one of the proposed measures includes barring players with disciplinary problems from participating in international tournaments if they refuse to adhere to BAM regulations.
BAM and the Performance Committee have emphasised the importance of discipline, professionalism and accountability within the national squad, adding that several issues have already been flagged and are being taken seriously for the development of the sport.
Tengku Zafrul said the aim is to set an example not only as punishment but also as a warning to other players, covering both junior and senior athletes.
As part of stricter disciplinary control, BAM has also decided that all unmarried national players must reside at the Badminton Academy of Malaysia (ABM) hostel in Bukit Kiara.
He said exemptions would only be given to married players or those with valid reasons such as medical conditions or family caregiving responsibilities.
According to him, most players have accepted the decision, although two or three are reportedly still not in agreement.
He added that some explanations were given but were not considered strong enough, stressing that valid reasons such as medical issues or caring for sick parents would be taken into account.
Tengku Zafrul also pointed out that former national legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei himself stayed in the hostel throughout his playing career.
He stressed that BAM will not compromise on discipline as it is essential in producing world-class athletes and achieving Malaysia’s goals in major tournaments, including the Olympic Games.
