Malaysia Eye Semi-Finals In Commonwealth Games 3×3 Basketball Debut

Date:

Malaysia’s men’s 3×3 basketball team will kick off their Commonwealth Games campaign against Fiji in their opening Group B match on Saturday.

Making their debut in the event, Malaysia are targeting a place in the semi-finals of the competition in Glasgow.

Team manager Yeow Jie Xiang believes the draw has worked in Malaysia’s favour and is confident the squad can challenge for a spot in the last four.

“I think the draw is in our favour. Our target is to reach the semi-finals,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Basketball Association secretary-general Tan Kee Hian said the Commonwealth Games will also serve as an important stepping stone in the team’s preparations for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in September.

Malaysia qualified for the Glasgow Games through their world ranking and will be represented by Chong Zhen Yang, Chang Zi Fueng, Ting Chun Hong and Ooi Xian Fu.

Malaysia have been drawn in Group B alongside Fiji, England, Jamaica, Kenya and Singapore.

Group A features Australia, the Cayman Islands, Guyana, New Zealand, Nigeria and hosts Scotland.

The group winners will advance directly to the semi-finals, while the second and third-placed teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals.
