Malaysia’s Para Cyclists Shine: Four Golds at ASEAN Para Games Despite Injuries and Controversy!

Date:

Malaysian para cyclists delivered an outstanding performance in track cycling at the ASEAN Para Games 2025, claiming four out of five gold medals on offer.

Mohamad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin opened the gold medal tally by winning the men’s C1-C2 1km time trial with a time of 1:16.005 seconds, despite a pre-race controversy in which his bike initially failed a final check following a protest from another country.

“Although my bike wasn’t cleared initially, I focused on my ride and didn’t take it personally,” Mohamad Yusof said. He revealed that his left knee hit the aerobar during the race, causing pain, but he persevered to secure victory.

Ahmad Ahlami Mohamad added Malaysia’s second gold by winning the men’s B 1km time trial in 1:06.252 seconds.

Nur Suraiya Muhamad Zamri continued the golden streak with a third gold in the women’s B 1km time trial, finishing in 1:16.203 seconds.

The mixed tandem team sprint then delivered Malaysia’s fourth gold medal of the day in para cycling.

Malaysia narrowly missed a clean sweep, taking silver and bronze in the men’s C3-C5 1km time trial, which was won by Thailand.

Mohamad Yusof said he will have his injured knee examined by doctors at the National Sports Institute and expressed his gratitude for contributing to Malaysia’s medal tally, thanking his supporters for their encouragement.
