Australian winger Nishan Velupillay has etched his name into football history after becoming the first player of Malaysian descent to appear at a FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old made his World Cup debut after coming off the bench during Australia’s impressive 2-0 victory over Türkiye in their Group D opener in Vancouver, Canada.
Velupillay was introduced in the 61st minute and played a valuable role as the Socceroos secured all three points in a commanding performance under head coach Tony Popovic.
Known for his pace and attacking flair, the winger provided energy down the flanks and offered Australia an additional attacking threat during the closing stages of the match.
While born and raised in Melbourne, Velupillay has strong Malaysian roots. His father, Sasinath Velupillay, is a Malaysian of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, while his mother, Gillian Velupillay, is of Anglo-Indian descent.
His journey to football’s biggest stage began in the youth ranks of Melbourne Victory, where he steadily developed before breaking into the club’s senior squad.
Velupillay enjoyed a breakthrough 2024-2025 campaign, finishing as Melbourne Victory’s leading scorer and establishing himself as one of Australia’s most exciting attacking talents.
His impressive club performances earned him a place in Australia’s World Cup squad, culminating in a historic appearance that has drawn attention from football fans in both Australia and Malaysia.
The milestone is seen as a proud moment for Malaysians, particularly within the Tamil community, as Velupillay becomes the first footballer of Malaysian heritage to compete on the sport’s grandest stage.
