Sze Fei-Izzuddin End Malaysia’s 18-Year Wait For Indonesia Open Men’s Doubles Title

Date:

Malaysia’s professional men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, made history by ending the nation’s 18-year wait for the Indonesia Open men’s doubles crown after clinching the prestigious title in Jakarta on Sunday.

Competing in front of a passionate home crowd at Istora Senayan, the world No. 8 pair produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Indonesia’s Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin 13-21, 21-18, 21-10 in the final.

The victory marked Malaysia’s first men’s doubles triumph at the Super 1000 tournament since Zakry Abdul Latif and Fairuzizuan Tazari captured the title in 2008.

Seeded seventh in the tournament, Sze Fei and Izzuddin struggled to find their rhythm early on as the Indonesian duo capitalised on strong home support and an aggressive attacking game to dominate the opening set 21-13.

However, the Malaysians responded strongly in the second set, tightening up their play and reducing unforced errors to regain control of the match. Their improved performance paid off as they edged the set 21-18 to force a deciding game.

Carrying the momentum into the final set, Sze Fei and Izzuddin delivered a dominant display, controlling the rallies and dictating play from start to finish. The Indonesian pair were unable to replicate their earlier intensity as the Malaysians surged to a convincing 21-10 victory.

The title continues an impressive run of form for the pair, who recently reached the semi-finals of the Thailand Open and finished runners-up at the Malaysia Masters.

Their latest achievement further strengthens their reputation as one of the most consistent men’s doubles partnerships on the international circuit and signals their growing presence among the world’s elite badminton pairs.
