Indonesia is set to introduce new rules requiring all accommodation providers listed on online travel agency (OTA) platforms to hold valid business licences by June 2027, in a move aimed at tightening oversight of the country’s tourism industry.
Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the government is developing a digital verification system using the country’s Online Single Submission (OSS) platform to automatically check whether listed properties are properly licensed.
The system will connect OTA platforms through an Application Programming Interface (API), allowing real-time verification of accommodation data across hotels, villas, homestays and short-term rental listings.
Authorities said the policy is designed to create a fairer and more competitive tourism sector while supporting sustainable industry growth and improving regulatory compliance.
Officials have also identified several unlicensed operators and plan to submit their details to OTA platforms for enforcement action.
Under the new rules, online platforms would be required to suspend or remove non-compliant listings within two months of receiving an official notice.
The initiative is expected to strengthen governance in Indonesia’s digital tourism ecosystem while protecting travellers and encouraging operators to formalise their businesses.
