Japan Pushes For Stricter Social Media Age Checks For Children

Date:

Japan is considering tougher measures to protect children on social media, with a government panel recommending stricter age verification requirements and limits on certain platform features.

The communications ministry panel said social media companies should play a greater role in safeguarding young users, amid growing concerns over excessive usage and its impact on children’s mental and physical well-being.

The proposal also aims to address risks linked to social media, including cases involving minors and criminal activity.

However, the panel stopped short of supporting a blanket age-based ban similar to those introduced in some countries, arguing that social media remains an important communication tool.

Current protections largely rely on website filtering services provided by mobile carriers and parental supervision at home.

Since last year, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry has been exploring ways to expand the responsibilities of social media platforms and smartphone operating system providers in protecting children online.

The Children and Families Agency is expected to review the panel’s final recommendations, due this summer, before deciding on specific measures and whether changes to existing laws are needed.
