ECRL Construction Halted After Temporary Steel Canopy Collapses on MRR2

Date:

All construction work for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project at Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 2 (MRR2) FT28 towards Batu Caves, involving a temporary steel canopy, has been suspended following an accident yesterday afternoon.

Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL), the project owner, said construction in the area has been halted pending a full investigation by the authorities after a Suzuki Swift vehicle was struck by the temporary structure at around 2:00 PM.

“MRL is aware of the incident involving the temporary steel canopy on MRR2 FT28 towards Batu Caves. Current information indicates that the driver of the vehicle is safe,” the company said in a statement.

MRL added that immediate financial assistance will be provided to the vehicle owner while awaiting the outcome of the investigation and related claims.

Authorities and emergency response agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Public Works Department (JKR), and Department of Occupational Safety and Health (JKKP), were on-site to manage the situation. The temporary structure has been cleared and relocated under official supervision.

“ECRL is committed to fully cooperating with all authorities during the ongoing investigation and ensuring all safety measures are strictly followed. The safety of road users, the public, and project workers remains our top priority,” MRL said. The affected road has since reopened, with drivers advised to exercise caution and follow traffic and safety guidelines issued at the site.

The incident occurred as a temporary steel canopy used for the Road Under Bridge (RUB) #16 construction reportedly failed, striking the Suzuki Swift. The canopy was installed to protect road users from falling construction debris and facilitate RUB #16 work.

Construction of RUB #16 was completed in October 2025, with plans to dismantle the temporary structure scheduled to begin on 20 November following approval from the relevant authorities.
