A new study has revealed that vape devices, or e-cigarettes, can be up to 3,000 times more contaminated with bacteria and fungi than the average toilet seat, raising serious hygiene concerns for users.
Researchers from BioLabTests, in partnership with online nicotine retailer Haypp, conducted laboratory tests on a strawberry ice-flavored Lost Mary vape. Swabs were taken immediately after opening and again over a two-week period. The team found that microbial colonies multiplied rapidly within just two to three days, with the mouthpiece showing the highest levels of contamination. By day three, swabs revealed around 150,000 colony-forming units (CFUs) of bacteria and fungi—far exceeding the bacterial load on a typical public toilet.
Microbes identified on the devices included Bacillus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, E. coli, and yeast and mold—all capable of causing infections or respiratory irritation. Many of these bacteria likely originate from unwashed hands or contact with contaminated surfaces, with biofilms forming on the vape surfaces over time.
Reynold Mpofu, a microbiologist at BioLabTests, emphasized the importance of hygiene: “Every touch and puff contributes to bacterial build-up. Regular cleaning of vape devices is critical to prevent potentially harmful microbial growth.”
The study recommends wiping down both the mouthpiece and body of vapes every three days using antibacterial cleaners or alcohol wipes. For devices with removable parts, each piece should be cleaned individually to eliminate residue and bacteria effectively.
Vaping has become increasingly popular in the UK, with 5.4 million regular users—outnumbering traditional cigarette smokers for the first time. While e-cigarettes are considered less harmful than smoking, experts warn that vaping is not risk-free, with links to heart disease, lung conditions, gum disease, and risks to developing brains in teenagers and unborn babies.
Markus Lindblad from Haypp added: “Unlike smartphones, vapes are placed in the mouth, making hygiene even more crucial. Routine cleaning is essential to reduce health risks associated with contaminated devices.”
With thousands of flavors available worldwide, this research serves as a reminder that regular cleaning should be a priority for all vape users.
