A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer pleaded not guilty in the sessions court today to 10 counts of accepting bribes totaling RM4,300.
Muhammad Azizi Kamali, 40, who is stationed at the Kedah and Perlis MMEA headquarters, is accused of receiving the bribes three years ago from the owner of a company.
The accused made his plea before Sessions Court Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail.
The alleged payments, totaling RM4,300, were reportedly transferred online from a woman’s bank account into Azizi’s account between February 3, 2022, and January 12, 2023.
Azizi faces charges under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which pertains to a civil servant accepting valuable items without consideration from a person connected to his official duties. Conviction carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Rais Adha Ramli requested bail of RM50,000 with one surety. Defence lawyer Nur Shuhadah Mahzan asked for a lower bail of RM10,000, citing that her client supports a wife and three school-going children, with his youngest child and wife having health issues.
The court granted bail at RM10,000 with one surety and scheduled the case for remention on December 22.
