A woman in her 20s was killed and a man of similar age critically injured in a shark attack at a beach near a popular surfing area on Australia’s east coast on Thursday.

Emergency services responded to calls at Crowdy Bay, near Port Macquarie—approximately 350 km north of Sydney—after reports that two people had been bitten by a shark, New South Wales state police confirmed.

The woman, whose identity has yet to be formally verified, died at the scene. The man, also believed to be in his 20s, was airlifted to hospital and remains in critical condition.
