Malaysians Must Apply for UK Electronic Travel Authorisation Starting 25 Feb 2026

Date:

Beginning February 25, 2026, Malaysians will no longer be able to enter the United Kingdom without obtaining advance travel permission, even if they do not require a visa. The UK government has confirmed that citizens from 85 visa-exempt countries, including Malaysia, must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to travelling.

The ETA requirement applies to all short-term visits as well as transit through any UK airport. The system, introduced in October 2023, will be fully enforced from early 2026 as part of the UK’s move towards a digital and contactless immigration process.

Travellers can apply through the UK ETA mobile application, with the application costing £16 (approximately RM90). Most approvals are expected to be granted within minutes, but authorities advise submitting applications at least three days before departure to account for potential additional checks.

British and Irish citizens are exempt from the ETA requirement, including dual nationals. The UK government advises dual citizens to use their British passport or carry proof of UK citizenship to avoid travel disruptions.

The UK Home Office stated that the ETA system is designed to enhance border security and give authorities better oversight of travellers entering the country.
