Man Fined RM4,000 for Filming Woman in Mall Toilet

Date:

A 24-year-old jobless man was fined RM4,000 today after pleading guilty in the magistrate’s court to secretly recording a woman inside a toilet at a Mayang Mall last month.

Muhammad Syahmi Mat Ros admitted to the offence before Magistrate Iffah Nabihah Mohd Ishak. He was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ jail, a fine, or both.

The court heard that Syahmi attempted to outrage the modesty of a 29-year-old saleswoman by using his mobile phone to record her through the gap of a toilet cubicle door at 6.12pm on Nov 20.

Represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Nurul Husna Zukepeli @ Zulkifli, Syahmi pleaded guilty and was fined RM4,000, or six months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay.

Earlier reports stated the victim noticed a phone appearing through the cubicle gap. She then spotted a man holding the device outside the toilet before he fled. She managed to record him escaping, capturing his outfit: a white Ultraman T-shirt with the words “Aku Kuat Aku Ultraman,” dark jeans and a sling bag.

Police arrested the suspect eight days later during a raid at a barber shop in Jalan Merbau, Kampung Bukit Kecil, Setiu, and seized a mobile phone believed to have been used in the incident.
