Malaysia has officially approved Singapore’s request to establish a new consulate in Sarawak.
The announcement was made by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the 12th Singapore–Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat in Singapore, according to a Facebook post by the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (Statos).
Wong said the new mission would enhance support for Singaporeans residing in the state and deepen people-to-people ties.
“This will enable us to offer consular support to Singaporeans living there and further strengthen the already strong bonds between our people,” he said.
Statos noted that the idea of setting up a Sarawak-based consulate was first raised during the previous Leaders’ Retreat in Putrajaya in January — the first bilateral meeting between Anwar and Wong.
A joint statement issued then acknowledged Singapore’s intention to open the consulate, pending Malaysia’s formal approval.
Singapore currently operates two diplomatic missions in Malaysia: the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and a consulate in Johor Bahru, which began operations in 2009.
