Cross-Border Taxis to Drop Passengers Anywhere in Malaysia and Singapore

Date:

Cross-border taxis between Malaysia and Singapore will soon be allowed to drop passengers off at any location in both countries, under new rules announced today by their respective transport ministries.

Previously, Malaysian taxis could only drop passengers at Singapore’s Ban San Street Terminal, while Singaporean taxis were restricted to Larkin Sentral in Johor Bahru. Under the new arrangement, taxis can drop passengers at any location but are only permitted to pick them up at designated points, preventing them from offering local point-to-point services.

The transport ministries also confirmed that the quota for cross-border taxis will increase from 200 to 500. Both countries will collaborate on regulations for cross-border ride-hailing and e-hailing services to complement the scheme.

Licensed taxis must be easily identifiable through official livery and tamper-proof number plates and will be required to install Singapore’s ERP2 on-board unit for entry into the republic.

“To protect passengers and other road users, both countries will work towards improving insurance coverage for cross-border taxis and speeding up claims processing in case of accidents,” the joint statement said.

The ministries added that these improvements reflect their commitment to enhancing cross-border connectivity and the commuting experience between Singapore and Malaysia. Officials from both sides will continue close engagement to implement the enhanced taxi and bus services promptly.

The announcement follows discussions at the 12th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat, where Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted plans to make the cross-border taxi scheme more convenient for travellers.
