Man Arrested for Parang Attack on Elderly Surau Caretaker in Kamunting

Date:

Police have arrested a 55-year-old man following a violent attack on an elderly caretaker at a surau in Bukit Jana, Kamunting, on Wednesday. The 68-year-old victim sustained serious injuries.

Taiping police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Nasir Ismail said the suspect, who has a history of criminal and drug offenses with 16 prior cases and tested positive for morphine, is a psychiatric patient who has previously received hospital treatment.

“The victim was in the surau when the suspect suddenly approached and attacked him multiple times on the head and hands with a parang,” he said.

The suspect was apprehended at 4.30pm shortly after the incident. He is currently in police custody, and authorities plan to seek a remand order at the Taiping Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The victim is receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital for his severe injuries. Police believe the assault was motivated by a personal grievance the suspect held against the caretaker.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code, and further investigations are ongoing.
