Man Earning RM2,000 a Month Goes Viral After Sharing He Took RM20k Bank Loan to Afford Wedding

Date:

A Threads post by a man claiming to earn RM2,000 a month has gone viral after he revealed he had to take a bank loan just to afford his wedding.

In a lengthy post, the man shared the struggles he faced trying to get married on a limited income. He said his RM2,000 monthly salary wasn’t enough to cover wedding expenses, forcing him to take a RM20,000 bank loan. “I’m a poor B40 man. I work a regular job, earning RM2,000. I had to take a bank loan to get married. If I didn’t, where would I find RM20k?” he wrote.

He explained that his bride’s family rejected the idea of a small wedding, calling it “embarrassing,” and admitted that at 30 years old, he hadn’t saved enough. “They didn’t want a simple ceremony. Said it would bring shame. Even a financial advisor told me not to take a loan. But how else can I come up with that kind of money?” he added.

The man also criticised societal norms that expect men to be financially ready for marriage regardless of their income, saying, “Being poor automatically becomes a shame. This world is messed up.” He expressed frustration with expensive wedding customs, claiming they mainly benefit wealthy families while putting B40 earners under financial stress.

The post sparked a mix of reactions online. Some sympathised with his situation, while others suggested better financial planning or taking extra work. Comments included advice like, “Become a delivery rider after work or sell small products. You can’t just wait for things to change,” and, “If you saved RM100/month from age 18, with a 5% yearly dividend, you’d have RM19.1k by 30. Why start now?”

The viral thread has ignited broader discussion about traditional wedding customs versus financial realities, especially for young Malaysians in the B40 group. While some argued weddings should match a couple’s means, others emphasised the importance of early financial planning.
