A Magistrate’s Court here today fined a young man RM2,000 after he pleaded guilty to organising an illegal street race “just for fun.”
Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin delivered a stern reprimand before imposing the sentence, telling the accused: “You knew this was wrong. What if someone had died?”
The accused, Ngok Sing Wing, 21, admitted to the offence during proceedings and offered no reasonable justification, stating only that it was done for entertainment.
According to the charge, Ngok was accused of sponsoring, advertising, or assisting in the organisation or supervision of an unauthorised speed race along Jalan Apas–Balung here between 11.30pm on Aug 1, 2021, and 7.45am on Aug 2, 2021.
He was charged under Section 81(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Joan Lee from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (BSPT) of the Tawau District Police Headquarters said the accused was arrested during an Ops Samseng Jalanan operation, described as the largest such operation at the time.
She said eight other offenders had already been charged and sentenced, while Ngok had evaded arrest and gone into hiding for nearly four years after the incident.
“His whereabouts were only discovered after the investigating officer traced him with assistance from the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), using his workplace address in Kemaman, Terengganu,” she said.
Joan urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as a lesson to the accused and a clear warning to the public.
Based on the case facts, police detected a group of individuals and their vehicles gathered to watch two motorcycles racing side by side at high speed, including performing dangerous ‘superman’ stunts.
Following the operation, police detained the accused along with a group of men in front of a motorcycle workshop believed to be linked to the illegal racing activity.
