Lawyer Arrested For Allegedly Smuggling Drugs Into Marang Prison

Date:

A lawyer has been arrested for allegedly conspiring with an inmate to smuggle drugs into Marang Prison in Terengganu.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the 32-year-old suspect was detained following the discovery of drugs in the possession of a 25-year-old male inmate during a routine inspection at the prison at about 5pm on December 23.

He said an initial scan using a body scanner detected foreign objects inside the inmate, who had just returned from proceedings at the Kuala Terengganu High Court.

“The inmate was immediately isolated and placed under close observation at the prison clinic before being taken to the Merchang Health Clinic the following day for further examination. The examination confirmed the presence of several suspicious foreign objects in his body,” he said during a press conference today.

The inmate was later returned to the prison and remained in isolation. On the same day, he defecated and expelled 12 packets suspected to contain drugs, including yaba pills and cannabis.

Mohd Khairi said that on December 25, the inmate again expelled another 14 packets, believed to contain yaba pills and Erimin 5.

Following the incident, prison authorities lodged a police report at the Marang police station. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The drugs seized comprised 123g of yaba pills, 21g of cannabis and 13g of Erimin 5, estimated to be sufficient for about 800 drug users, with a total seizure value of RM16,000.

Further investigations by the Terengganu Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department led to the arrest of the lawyer to assist in the case.

“The suspect has been remanded for six days, from December 30 until January 4, to facilitate investigations under Section 107(c) of the Penal Code,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department is seeking public assistance and has urged an individual identified as Nurul Norasikin Aladin, 30, from Kampung Batin, Seberang Takir, to come forward to the nearest police station to assist with investigations.
